Piney Woods
The woodland area in East Texas known as Piney Woods is part of a larger forest that extends into Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The terrain is rolling with lower, wetter bottomlands that grow hardwood trees such as elm, mesquite and ash. This region is home to a variety of plants and animals that like woodlands and shorelines.

This region of Texas has a rich history. Native Americans lived here for thousands of years. Much later, Spanish missionaries, French soldiers, African-Americans and settlers from all over the world called East Texas home, as well.

Leave time behind as you sink into the relaxing sway of a vintage steam engine with a backdrop of countryside on the Texas State Railroad, traveling between Palestine and Rusk.

Visit Historic Jefferson, the most haunted town in Texas.

Port Arthur
"Cajun Capital of Texas"
Cajuns flocked to Port Arthur from 1927 when the Great Mississippi Flood brought farmers looking for black gold. Big refineries meant big jobs here in Southeast Texas. Our coastline, bayous, rivers and marshlands allowed Cajuns to provide for their families while living the same bayou lifestyle reminiscent of their years spent in southern Louisiana – just across the Causeway Bridge on Pleasure Island. The Cajuns settled here and brought with them their language, music, lifestyle, Cajun food and joy de vivre.
